Younger actors have always proved themselves more than capable of holding their own at Buxton Fringe.
This year’s Theatre category features two theatre companies from schools outside Buxton and two local youth theatre groups. Newcomers The Pendleton Codebreakers from Pendleton Sixth Form College School of Theatre present the acclaimed Breaking the Code, charting the life and work of Alan Turing - codebreaker, mathematical genius, pioneer of Artificial Intelligence, father of the modern computer and gay martyr. Regular visitors, Shadow Syndicate, return with Carpe Diem, a visceral production exploring how identities are formed, challenged and resisted. Apt and poignant, this modern allegory invites audiences to seize the day in a polarised world, recognising that more binds us than divides us.
Buxton Opera House’s Youth Fringe Company revisits Little Red who lives on the edge of The Woods with her mum. Mostly she hangs out with best friend Ash or Nana, but recently she has got a new online 'friend’. A new take on a familiar story, the play explores online safety, bullying and knife crime and has been put together by the company’s 2024 Work Experience cohort. In DNA, Buxton stalwart REC Youth Theatre looks at what happens when some teenagers do something bad - really bad - then panic and cover it up. When they find that the cover-up unites them, bringing harmony to their fractious lives, where is the incentive to put things right? Dark complexities of human behaviour, guilt, and consequences are investigated by this Buxton Fringe Award-winning company.
