Comedy matters at Buxton Fringe

PRESS RELEASE June 2024 For immediate release

There are around 50 shows making up the Buxton Fringe’s bumper Comedy section this year, all offering laughs but some also setting out to challenge audiences by making them think about serious matters through the lens of comedy.

Recently heard on Radio 4’s The Divil’s Own, John Meagher faces up to the big questions about life’s biggest decisions in John Meagher: Big Year. Writer for Mock The Week and The Now Show, Alex Kealy presents a show about fear which has been pronounced ‘sexily cerebral’ by none other than The Telegraph. Kieran Carr looks back on a period of grief in his life via a series of connections to people, places and things in I’m Trying My Best. Creator of BBC Comedy, White Van Man,Adrian Poynton is trying to come to terms with his dad scattering his mum’s ashes without him in his ultimately life-affirming show, Ashes.

The Lancashire Witch Trials are the inspiration for Edy Hurst’s Wonderfull Discoveries of Witches in the Countie of Himself. “Blow out ya candles and hop on your broomstick!”, he says. Generation eXpert Samantha Day tries to discover which generation is best by taking a look through history and inviting audience members to find out whether they were smart enough to be born at the right time.

Santa has gone into rehab in Grotto, an award-winning and distinctly non-seasonal show from Terry Victor. Christmas will never be the same again! There is more fiction with Daniel Nicholas’s Art To Die For. It’s an interactive one-man murder mystery where audiences get to solve a crime. Abby Rolling meanwhile uses her 30 years’ experience in a magistrate’s court to take a wry look at a criminal justice system in terminal decline for her show, Sh*t Lawyer.

Pepita Productions/Sweet Productions explore Zeit Heist: More than a Feeling asking whether people’s personal passions are being hijacked by the crowd. The phenomena of “joy-stealing” is examined in an interactive show including a feel-good singalong.

Finally, there is even a show offering to change Fringe-goers’ afterlifes! Mark Speed’s The End of The World Show promises to reveal which religion guarantees booze for eternity with “nice Mr Death” helping to navigate the best end-of-times deals.

There is comedy galore at Buxton Fringe. Fringe-goers can pick up a programme, see www.buxtonfringe.org.uk or download the free Buxton Fringe App.

The Fringe wishes to thank High Peak Borough Council, its Fringe Friends and the town’s many Fringe supporters and venues.
