Solo comics take centre stage at Buxton Fringe

PRESS RELEASE June 2024 For immediate release

One person shows often make up the backbone of the Buxton Fringe and this year is no exception with a huge variety of shows offering everything from the purely pensive to the simply outrageous.

Playing on words is a comic staple and features heavily this year. Kevin O’Brien’s ABC of one-liner jokes takes us through an alphabet of 150 jokes in 60 mins. Punmeister Darren Walsh aims for the groan not the laugh with his show New Puns and multi-award-winning comic Richard Pulsford’s Get Rich Quick is packed full of quality wordplay.

Newcomers this year include Canadian and self-confessed over-sharer Allyson June Smith, and all the way from Australia comes Thao Thanh Cao sharing her comedy tips and aiming to offend with Confessions of A Comedian. Thao has a second show, Marmalade, jam-packed with one-liners.

Heading up the M6 is ‘half-soaked Brummie’ Lovdev Barpaga, one of the most brilliantly daft comics you will ever see according to Joe Lycett. And heading south is Bolton’s hottest new comedian Maura Jackson pondering life’s challenges at 53 with her show More O Me.

‘Titologist’ and Edinburgh Fringe nominee Samantha Day gets her tit jokes out in The Booby Trap, whilst Hayley’s Comic features Hayley Ellis, with silly stories and acute observations. Isabelle Farah’s spellbinding Nebuchadnezzar is a silly show about love, war and Ancient Babylon. From Babylon to the Wild West, Will BF: The Last Gun takes audiences on a tour of the Wild West of Seventies’ Hollywood.

Clairvoyance, tantric phenomena and all things mystical are explored in Jane Mosse’s Jane Puts Her Finger On It in which the Queen of Quandary questions her talents. Meanwhile Ishi Khan explores being dumped in Love Desires Strawberries.

Grandfather and Godfather of Jewish Comedy Henry Churniavsky returns for a third year still trying to get Jew Respect from his family and growing old disgracefully. Meanwhile Leslie Bloom combines laughter and detective skills in Leslie Bloom Solves A Murder. Steve Vertigo’s Go Big is both surreal and contemplative as he takes a tumble down many rabbit holes.

Louise Atkinson questions how we make incorrect assumptions about people in her show She’s Got The Look while Hannah Platt is a new comic with an unflinching outlook on the world as well as an interest in how the world looks back at her following her diagnosis of body dysmorphia..

Multi award-winning Nathan Cassidy brings two shows: International Man of Mestory and the Spine that Shagged Me. One show tries to find fun in a chaotic world and the other? Well, he did his back in.

Award-wining compere Philip Simon offers a mix of brand-new jokes and witty off the cuff remarks in his show: Shall I Compere Thee in a Funny Way. Meanwhile ‘aggressively nerdy’ Sasha Ellen presents Brimful of Sasha, a brand-new hour of stand-up comedy.

Fringe Chair Stephen Walker: “Every year I never cease to be amazed at the sheer variety of the shows we have on offer. This year’s comedy stars are truly shining a light on all areas of life showing that comedy can unite us all”

This is just a flavour of the 50 or so comedy shows on offer at Buxton Fringe. Fringe-goers can pick up a programme, see www.buxtonfringe.org.uk or download the free Buxton Fringe App.

The Fringe wishes to thank High Peak Borough Council, its Fringe Friends and the town’s many Fringe supporters and venues.
