PRESS RELEASE June 2024 For immediate release
Buxton Fringe’s comedy section is bigger than ever this year with some 50 entries, many of which involve groups of comedians for even bigger laughs!
AComedyTapas with Jesters Dublin is exactly what it says on the tin: a lot of comedians to choose from, deliberately catering for all tastes. They will be performing for free at new venue Beer & Bean cafe. The Jesters will also be at the Green Man Gallery with their fun take on politics, A Political Brunch, while their third outing, Tinder Tales, back at the Beer & Bean, is all about dating and requires audience participation - be warned.
The party continues as drag act Angela Bra returns with three shows this year, the very imaginatively titled Microrave plus Social Calendar Girl and Annie & Angela’s Dumbgenz and Dragqueen. Fringe Award-nominated Angela brings great fun and energy and a few pop song sing-alongs. There is more fun to be had with Arancini: Balls of Fun in which Helen Rice (recent support for Tom Wrigglesworth) and Sarah Carratt (I’ll Have What She’s Having) view life through a quirky lens presenting sketches and songs.
Underground’s Barrel of Laughs makes a welcome return. Housed this year in Spring Gardens Buxton’s favourite comedy club showcases the best of the Fringe every Friday night, offering a real bargain for audiences. The mayhem escalates with Imaginary Porno Charades: outrageous observations and porno puns, and Late Night Dirty Scrabble with Rob Rouse and Friends, the sell-out cult hit of Buxton and Edinburgh Fringes with guaranteed belly laughs. Rob Rouse returns with Radio 4 favourite, Tom Wrigglesworth, in The Unlikely Weightlifters, a live version of their podcast. It’s an hour of glorious nonsense and has absolutely nothing to do with weightlifting.
With an invitation to break out your doublets and hose, Fringe Award winner Impromptu Shakespeare returns with story and verse improvised in the moment for side-splitting and riotous fun. The history theme continues with It Just So Happened – An Alternative History Show in which three history buff comedians explore the history of Buxton.
Laughs and Tricks with Stu Turner and Stephen Owen looks set to provide unmissable entertainment combining stand-up comedy with hilarious magic. Another duo, Tom Hazelden and Joe Pike, offer My Last Two Brain Cells following what happens when disaster strikes in Gary’s brain and there are only two idiotic brain cells left to save him. It’s a pity they can’t agree how.
Every night is opening night in The Totally Improvised Musical. It can’t be that hard, can it? Audiences are invited to come and find out with CSzUK.
Fringe Chair Stephen Walker says: “I’m just awestruck at the pure imagination and inventiveness displayed in all these shows. This year the Buxton Fringe really is pushing boundaries.”
There is plenty more comedy on offer at Buxton Fringe. Fringe-goers can pick up a programme, see www.buxtonfringe.org.uk or download the free Buxton Fringe App.
The Fringe wishes to thank High Peak Borough Council, its Fringe Friends and the town’s many Fringe supporters and venues.
