Buxton Fringe still has things to say

PRESS RELEASE: For immediate release June 22nd 2020

Spoken Word is always one of the most diverse Fringe categories with entries ranging from lectures to poetry, and even online, this year looks like being no exception.

Buxton Drama League presents Alice Goes Elsewhere, a darkly comic musical audio-play written and composed by Will Blake about a talented young musicians struggling with the realities of modern life. Blackboard Theatre presents an hour-long podcast in which two teachers explore different educational approaches and share stories about their lives as teachers. Mark Gwynne Jones presents presents Voices from the Peak, a new soundscape weaving together people’s stories, places and wildlife into an artistic audio recording.

Buxton Spoken Word features Buxton and High Peak poets presenting their own work plus their choice of poetry that has inspired their writing. Chapel Arts authors read recent poems inspired by life under lockdown, as well as some gloriously escapist modern folktales and a short play by Anne Cawthorn featuring the Covid adventures of Fred, Doris and Ethel. Edale poet Terry Dammery presents the launch of Einstein’s Bicycle, a verse novel celebrating a culture old as Chaucer and tilting at pomposity and privilege.

Meanwhile Transition Buxton will be providing food for thought in two mini-seminars: Carol Huff on her personal voyage to plant-based living and Dr Terry Newholm on ‘Diet in the Anthropocene'.

Fringe Marketing Officer Stephanie Billen says: “This year more than ever the Fringe’s poets, storytellers and lecturers have a great deal to express and Fringe2020 will provide a fascinating oral record of lockdown life as well as plenty of hope and inspiration for the future.”
