Music to put a song in our hearts at Buxton Fringe

PRESS RELEASE: For immediate release June 22nd 2020

With the 2020 Buxton Festival Fringe going online to bring a range of events to Fringe audiences, musical acts are finding new ways to engage with their audiences.

Burbage Band promises not only great music but a video art installation in its rendition of the song Happy, with all parts recorded in isolation. Meanwhile High Peak Orchestra look back to last year’s acclaimed concert of Bruch’s Violin Concerto No 1 featuring soloist Iona Macdonald.

Guitarist and singer Will Hawthorne will be presenting a cornucopia of his favourite shows, from Killer B’s to 60s Film songs, while Darren Poyzer presents three 30-minute sessions of entirely new material over the course of the Fringe. Twice Buxton Fringe Award- winner, Egriega presents a new show, telling the story of the forgotten Fado singer Xuxu Carvalho, featuring Portuguese Fado music and an audio recording of her biography. The ever-popular Club Acoustic will be bringing a range of acts featuring local musicians recorded over the lockdown period.

In Journey to Sky Blue, Cheshire composer and pianist Adrian Lord plays joyful and uplifting music from his first two albums to help you switch off and wind down, while in The Music of Trees, guitarist Geoff Robb performs via live stream offering music inspired by nature with tree stories and folklore. The Roth Guitar Duo (Sam Rodwell and Emma Smith) performs an eclectic mix for all musical tastes.

Buxton International Festival and Buxton Opera House’s Kaleidoscope Choir will be showcasing the musical and social aspects of their Zoom workshops via YouTube. The Derby City Singers will be sharing their rendition of the beautiful favourite, Moon River, recorded separately over lockdown. Peak Voices, featuring tenor Chris Blackshaw, perform songs from your favourite musicals and a spectacular performance of Nessun Dorma. Poperasops combine music and comedy featuring pop songs performed ‘opera style’. Competing sopranos battling it out will look and sound magnificent, and bring a smile to your face! Finally Ian Bowns, assisted by Carol Bowns & Sarah Owens, will be presenting a different traditional and contemporary folk song on each day of the Fringe.

Fringe Marketing Officer Stephanie Billen says: “Music is traditionally one of the larger categories at Buxton Fringe and this year is no exception with a wonderful array of music across different genres and some with a live dimension. We are so pleased that Fringe musicians have rallied in this way.”
