All singing and all dancing - 2020 Buxton Fringe is blooming marvellous!

PRESS RELEASE: For immediate release June 22nd 2020

Despite the challenges of this year, Buxton Fringe is able to boast entertainment in every one of its available categories of entertainment.

Visitors may not be free to come to Buxton but Buxton will come to them via some fascinating vintage films showcased by Buxton Film via the BFI Archive and featuring Peak District tourism 1950s’ style and the sight of soldiers enjoying hydrotherapy at the Devonshire Hospital. Discover Buxton Tours is meanwhile airing a special film recorded in the Old Hall’s Orchestra Pit before it became part of the new Crescent development and featuring a guest appearance from Mary Queen of Scots herself.

Street Theatre arrives on your smartphone screen thanks to the ever popular Buxton Drama League posting daily Shakespeare Jukebox videos throughout the Fringe.

Buxton in Bloom will be hosting its annual garden competition online while the Serpentine Community Garden offers a chance to enjoy its Secret Garden event by invitation only to allow for social distancing.

Joyful performer Rebecca Rhythm offers Time to Tap, an improvised tap performance delivered live via her Facebook page, while Chapel-en-le-Frith Morris offers a Virtual Day of Dance and Summit presents an online Buxton Special Issue of experimental music, film and performance.

Lockdown has encouraged many people to be more creative themselves. Peak District Events is presenting two online writing workshops featuring fun prompts and help for fiction and non-fiction writers alike.

Finally, there is a chance to immerse oneself in all the events you wish were happening on the Fringe but aren’t. The Fringe of the Fringe from Buxton Fringe of 1 - via Facebook and Twitter - looks set to be one of the oddest online events of the Fringe this year!

Fringe Marketing Officer Stephanie Billen says: “I’ve always had a special affection for the uncategorisable on the Fringe and this year we have plenty of that as well as lots to enjoy in small but always exciting categories such as Dance and Film.”

More entries are coming in by the day. For full details of all the performances at Buxton Fringe including Comedy, Theatre, Music, Spoken Word, Visual Arts and more see www.buxtonfringe.org.uk or the free Buxton Fringe App.

The Fringe wishes to thank its sponsor The University of Derby as well as financial supporters The Trevor Osborne Charitable Trust and High Peak Borough Council, its Fringe Friends and the town’s many Fringe supporters and venues.
