PRESS RELEASE for immediate release June 22nd 2019
Fairfield Band is to perform a special piece of music commissioned by Buxton Festival Fringe to mark its 40th year.
The work by Charles Kitchen will be performed by the brass band during the occasion of the crowning of the Wells Dressing Festival Queen on Sunday July 7 at St John’s Church at 3.15pm.
Entitled The Victorians, the piece reflects changes that affected the town during that era following the growth of the railways and the upheaval of the Industrial Revolution.
This is the second piece of music commissioned for Fringe40. In May, Burbage Band premiered The Secrets of the Water by Alistair Harrison, a second-year student at the University of Salford. The performance at Christ Church, Burbage was enthusiastically received by the audience and a video extract can be enjoyed on www.buxtonfringe.org.uk.
The music commissions are part of a number of special projects to mark the 40th Fringe. The Fringe started in 1980, a year after the Buxton International Festival which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. A Fringe40 archive exhibition can be seen at The Green Man Gallery and a Well Dressing is to be unveiled in honour of both the Festival and the Fringe. Fringe40 bags are on sale at the Green Man Gallery and will also be available alongside badges at the Fringe Information Desk next to the Opera House from July 3. A new Buxton Fringe App has also been launched.
Fringe40 is a specially extended event from July 3-24 and is the biggest Fringe ever with over 220 entries and over 760 individual performances. See www.buxtonfringe.org.uk, the free printed programme or the Buxton Fringe App for further information.
Fringe chair Keith Savage adds: “The Fringe wants to acknowledge the contribution that brass bands have made to the life of Buxton over the past 170 years and having this new piece for the Fairfield Band seems like an ideal way of celebrating both 40 years of the Fringe and the brass band legacy.”
