April 16 Fringe Deadline Approaches!

PRESS RELEASE 8th April 2017 For immediate release

With the deadline looming for its printed programme, Buxton Festival Fringe has confirmed 125 events already, 25% more than this time last year!

Says Fringe chair Keith Savage: "I'm looking forward more than ever to the Fringe. There is so much that is new and exciting lined-up already and there is still time for one or two more surprises. Along with the Buxton International Festival we'll be making the town proud in July." More Fringe entries are expected in the run up to Sunday April 16, the strict final deadline for the printed programme.

This year's Fringe runs from Wednesday 5 to Sunday July 23 and is already looking extra busy with a surge of recent entries from Underground Venues, now based at The Old Clubhouse, plus some exciting shows across all categories of entertainment at new managed venue, the Rotunda, a geodesic dome in the Pavilion Gardens. Many other venues, across Buxton and beyond, are also getting involved with 2017 seeing the return of BAT - the biennial Buxton Art Trail in studios and homes across the town - amongst other attractions.

Latest entries include a big injection of comedy including interactive comedy sketch show, Mike Raffone’s Brain Rinse, Puppetry of the Audience; a one-man Hancock’s Half Hour from James Hurn, and a whistle-stop musical tour of art history from Funny Women Award winner 2016, Harriet Braine. A massive Music section now includes Fringe Award-winning harpist Alice Kirwan performing with flautist Holly Melia, The Eisenach Ensemble with Baroque music at Eyam Parish Church, Zulu songs from Africa Entsha and a Latin American inspired flute and piano concert from the acclaimed Rachel Johnson and Jemima Palfreyman.

Some exciting recent theatre additions include award-winning Lucky Dog with Bethnal Green about the 1943 air raid shelter disaster, plus the return of their 2016 hit Hats Off to Laurel and Hardy; a new show, The Ladder, from Helen Rutter, who won a Fringe Award for Female Actor last year, and exciting youth theatre from locals The REC with Lord of the Flies, and Shadow Syndicate with a riots-set thriller, We Lost Elijah.

In other categories, latest entries include a screening of Harry Burton’s film Working with Pinter, fun for families with Blunderbus Theatre’s Dogs Don’t Do Ballet, Present from the Past’s audio visual feast of shared local memories in Other Events, and in the Spoken Word section, some feel-good stand up psychology from Georgina Kirk plus the welcome return of Discover Buxton’s Vera Brittain’s Tale in tribute to a famous Buxton resident.

Details of events are published on the Fringe website buxtonfringe.org.uk. The printed programme, redesigned and in a new landscape format, will be distributed in Buxton and beyond from the beginning of June. To keep in touch with the latest Fringe news, follow the website’s links to the Fringe blog and find the Fringe on Facebook and Twitter.
