Bright Young Things – Fresh New Theatre at Buxton Fringe

PRESS RELEASE 10th June 2013

For immediate release

Youth theatre on the Fringe has been growing and this year sees a particularly strong selection.

AQ Youth Theatre picked up three Fringe awards last year and return with the black comedy, Burying your Brother Under the Pavement, in which Tom tries to make sense of his brother's mysterious death. Regular visitors Shadow Syndicate bring (In)visible, looking at the concept of identity in the modern world.

Local groups are also strongly represented, Red Red Shoes by REC Youth Theatre Company is inspired by the Hans Christian Andersen story and tells the moving tale of a young girl living through turbulent times in Eastern Europe. There is conflict too in Measuring the Shadows by On My Mind. In an original piece from young 2012 Fringe New Writing nominee Lilly Posnett, six Jewish teenagers take refuge from Nazi persecution in a cellar, the threat of discovery giving rise to suffocating tensions.

Meanwhile for more blood-thirsty Shakespearian drama, Temple Theatre Company's Macbeth illuminates human nature at its worst. (Please note Macbeth dates have changed from the printed programme and are now July 18 and 19.)

Fringe chair Stephanie Billen comments: 'It is great to see new talent emerging on the Fringe and exciting to see the work being done both by established young people's drama groups and by teenagers coming together off their own bat.'

The Fringe is hugely grateful to its many supporters including its main sponsor The University of Derby Buxton as well as The Osborne Group, High Peak Borough Council, The Old Hall Hotel and The Cavendish Shopping Arcade.
