Visually Stunning: BAT And Others Adorn Buxton Fringe

Press Release 12 June 2012

Over recent years the development of visual arts in Buxton has been tremendously exciting and 2012 sees the return of BAT, the undoubted success of the 2010 Buxton Fringe. The biennial Buxton Art Trail sees art on display all over the town in artist studios, people's homes and business premises. Over 60 artists in 36 venues will be exhibiting a mix of contemporary and traditional paintings and crafts, bringing a real buzz to Buxton.

There is also a welcome return for two previously successful groups. The winners of last year's Visual Arts Show award, Kate Aimson, Norman Elliott and Louise Jannetta are Delving the Depths. Kate looks into the history of the Peak, Norman jumps from the mathematically severe to organised chaos while Louise's work will be touching on emotions. In Pavilion Gardens, ceramicists Earthworks are displaying a broad range of techniques, including slipware, wood and raku-fired vessels, garden pots and sculpture.

In Photography, the Buxton Photo Challenge gives entrants eight hours to capture eight amazing images on eight themes to form a snapshot of a day in the life of Buxton, resulting in a fascinating exhibition. Travelling further afield, fine art photographer Ivan Boden has been to Timor-Leste, Thailand and Indonesia and his photos display the joy, humour and grace in the faces of the people who call those places home.

Many individual artists will be exhibiting across the town: take a Walk on the Wildside with Lynne Wilkinson and her animal paintings, Mister Hope exhibits "Some Paintings I have Made", Sue Mortin celebrates Buxton's Water Goddess, and Suzanne Pearson's work is a contemporary interpretation of buildings and places around Buxton.

The prestigious Derbyshire Open featuring artworks selected by an independent panel will be in Buxton Museum and Art Gallery throughout the Fringe, Burbage Art Group have their annual exhibition, and closing the Fringe as usual is Peak District Artisans' Great Dome Art Fair featuring all 65 members in a wonderful location.

The Fringe is hugely grateful to its many supporters including its main sponsor The University of Derby Buxton as well as The Osborne Group, High Peak Borough Council, The Old Hall Hotel and The Cavendish Shopping Arcade.
