Buxton Juniors create a fringe for a Fringe

PRESS RELEASE: June 7th 2011

Buxton Junior school childeren and Fringe artist Gaye Chorlton with panels for a giant fringe to be displayed on the bandstand on Fringe SundayBuxton Junior School children were the first to sample a series of Buxton Festival Fringe art workshops designed to create a giant orange 'fringe' to go round the Pavilion Gardens Bandstand.

The decorated fringe will be displayed on top of the bandstand at Fringe Sunday, a free, open-air showcase of Fringe events taking place on Sunday July 10th from 2pm to 4.30pm at Buxton's Pavilion Gardens.

The Buxton Junior School pupils from years 5 and 6 worked with Fringe artist Gaye Chorlton, the originator of the project, and the school's art co-ordinator Mrs Crewe plus volunteers from Buxton Fringe and the school to come up with decorated panels which will be used to adorn the finished artwork. The children sewed plastic shapes onto weatherproof orange plastic squares and added beads and sequins to complete the effect. Feedback from the children included: 'I thought it was amazing! I did not know how to sew until I went to the workshop' and 'I really liked the Fringe Festival workshop and all of the workers were very nice and caring'.

Buxton Community School, Taddington and Priestcliffe, Earl Sterndale, Tideswell Guides and Peak Forest Primary are already lined up for further workshops, but other opportunities are available if any other local school would like to take part in the next couple of weeks. Anyone interested should email Gaye Chorlton info@gayechorlton.co.uk as soon as possible.

This year's Buxton Festival Fringe runs from Wednesday 6 to Sunday 24 July and details of all its events are available online at http://www.buxtonfringe.org.uk or in the widely available free printed programme.
