Visual Arts - What's new at Buxton Fringe

Press Release - 18 June 2010

The Fringe isn't just about performance. It's also a great showcase for the visual arts, a category that has been expanding in recent years.

New for this year is the pioneering Buxton Art Trail, linking the various individual artists' exhibitions around the town, including those by The London Art Group, Earthworks, Suzanne Pearson, and 2009 Fringe Award-winners Langley & Adrienne Brown, as well as Martin Olsson, Mister Hope & Kelly Dyson, Louise Janetta and the annual exhibition by The Burbage Art Group. Taking place over the weekend of July 10 and 11, it is a chance to see some key exhibitions as well as meet the artists, some in their homes and studios.

Also taking part in the Fringe this year are John & Carole Dronsfield with work inspired by a two-year adventure in New Zealand, and High Peak Artists & Craft Workers Association producing paintings, jewellery, ceramics and more inspired by poetry.

Prepare to be wowed by the larger-scale exhibitions such as Buxton Museum & Art Gallery's Derbyshire Open or the Great Dome Art Fair featuring 60 artists and makers from the Peak District.

2010 also marks the welcome return of the refreshingly continental Art on the Railings (of the Pavilion Gardens!). There are also photographic exhibitions organised by Brierlow Bar Bookshop and, new to the Fringe, Transition Buxton.

This year's Buxton Festival Fringe runs from Wednesday 7 to Sunday 25 July and details of all events are available online at http://www.buxtonfringe.org.uk or in the widely available free printed programme.

The Fringe is hugely grateful to its many supporters including its main sponsor The University of Derby Buxton as well as The Osborne Group, High Peak Borough Council and The Old Hall Hotel.
