Fresh new theatre at Buxton Festival Fringe

PRESS RELEASE: For immediate release May/June 2008

Buxton Festival Fringe (July 9-27) is renowned for its vast and varied Drama output and this year the section has been re-christened Theatre to reflect the sheer breadth of entertainment on offer.

This is the largest Fringe to date and Theatre is its biggest component with New Writing (highlighted for the first time in the programme) making up over half the entries.

Whether you're looking for brave new works or seasoned classics, there is a wealth of entertainment at the Fringe this year. Watch out for:

  • Vibrant venues: Underground Venues is back with a full programme at The Old Hall Hotel. Long established at The Old Clubhouse, Martin Beard's Nice One venue boasts an exciting programme in 70-seat venue Nice One and, new for 2008, 30-seat venue Nice & Bijou.
  • New writing: from groups including Fringe Award-winning Northern Gap, Dotted Line Productions (with George Telfer as Prince Philip), Back of the Hand Theatre (with Irish National Theatre director Tom Hickey) and popular Fringe regulars, Three's Company
  • Classic theatre: Shakespeare, Arthur Miller, Harold Pinter, Jean Paul Sartre, Samuel Beckett and other great writers
  • Bright young things: Buxton Community School's Imagine Theatre Company, Young REC, Bath University Student Theatre, Get a Real Job Promotions and more...
  • Something for everyone! Five Go Mad in Buxton, Again! from Black Box Theatre Co; I'm Ed Caesar - game show shenanigans from T-Pot Theatre Co; One Big Blow - brass band created solely with voices by RLT; Darling Deborah: Pepys's affair with his wife's maid staged by Altrincham Garrick Society; Hamlet comes to Poole's Cavern with 1623 Theatre Company; Fringe Benefits: an Edinburgh show hits the rocks in this piece by Moving Talent...
  • Don't forget to plan your Fringe-going using the free Fringe programme, widely available from June, or the website: http://www.buxtonfringe.org.uk, where listings are also published in full. Many shows are bookable through the Buxton Opera House (by phone and online) from June 1. And don't forget you can enjoy a free taster of Fringe events at Fringe Sunday (July 13) and at the Fringe Launch Party at the Orchestra Pit under the Old Hall organised by Underground Venues (July 9).

Stuck for something to do between shows? Come and see us at the Fringe Information Desk, help us improve the Fringe by filling in our new audience survey, have your say on the website Discussion Board, visit the lively Fringe Club courtesy of Underground Venues at the Old Hall Hotel or support the arts by having a Fringe Beer at the Old Clubhouse - 10p in every pint goes to the Fringe!
