Buxton Festival Fringe 2006 performer Kath Burlinson won the coveted Best Performance in a Fringe Production award at the Manchester Evening News Theatre Awards announced on December 5.

M.E.N theatre reviewer Philip Radcliffe praised her for her 'unforgettable solo performance' in her own creation, The Mother's Bones, which he described as 'an award-winning tour-de-force of physical theatre'.

Also nominated and praised in the same category were Buxton Festival Fringe performers Caroline Harding and Candida Gubbins from Two Friends for their 'compelling' performance in Two Sisters, 'a gripping black comedy set in Russia'.

The awards were a fitting tribute to this year's Fringe, the biggest ever, featuring 470 performances from 116 entrants in every field from drama to dance and visual arts to music.

2006 has been a particularly successful year for Buxton at the M.E.N. awards with Two Sisters also being nominated for Best Fringe Production and the official Buxton Festival being nominated for two awards in the Best Opera category for their staging of Telemann's comic Pimpinone and Opera Theatre Company's dramatic production of Monteverdi's The Coronation of Poppea.
