Committee News April 2005

What do we get up to in Fringe committee meetings? Check out these highlights from our get-togethers in March and April.

Carnival plans afoot

After entering the Carnival for the first time last year, we realised that it was a great way of raising our profile and distributing more Fringe programmes. Now we are busy planning a float for this year's Buxton Carnival on July 16, 2005. We need orange and white plastic bags to create rosettes and other orange and white paraphernalia for the float, plus volunteers both to help dress up the float (either on the morning of the carnival or the night before) and to walk alongside the float handing out Fringe Programmes and/or collecting for the Carnival charities. Think you can help?

Reviews

We need your thoughts. Peter Low and Robbie Carnegie are organising Fringe reviews. The Community School has already been approached re the possibility of students reviewing, but we need more volunteer reviewers! Each Fringe show is reviewed on the first night and a short piece emailed the next morning to the Fringe co-ordinator to be placed on the website and around town. Can you help?

In April's committee meeting, a discussion was held about the nature of reviews, suggesting that ideally reviewers should have some knowledge of the art form they were reviewing and that they should feel free to be constructively critical, while not slating things unkindly! What do you think?

Do you have a spare room? Entrants find it hard to find affordable digs. Committee members have been asked to put themselves forward or scout around for names of anyone who might be willing to put up performers or groups for a limited period in their homes.

Fringe Sunday

James West announced that Fringe Sunday, the open-air showcase of events to be held in the Pavilion Gardens on the first Sunday of the Fringe, would be officially sponsored by the Pavilion Gardens. A 40-piece band has already shown interest in participating.

Programme Distribution

Peter Low is to look into efficient ways to distribute the Fringe programmes. Volunteers are always needed for this task.
