PRESS RELEASE: For immediate release May 18th 2017

This year the Fringe is packed full of amazing stand-up comic talent. From well known radio performers, to up-and-coming writers, the Buxton Fringe will showcase them all.

Radio 4 star, Abi Roberts returns with Fat Girl Dancing (Work In Progress) prodding some sacred cows, whilst Alfie Moore, from Radio 4’s It’s A Fair Cop explores the art and science of murder investigation in his new show. Australian Adam Vincent who writes for Channel 4’s The Last Leg, brings his show How Not To Kill Yourself When Living in the Suburbs, whilst Harriet Kemsley, who plays Daisy in Jo Brands Channel 4’s sitcom Damned, arrives with her show, Freak. Stuart Laws and Annie McGrath, who between them have appeared on Radio 4, ITV2 and Channel Four, have a new double-bill, Stand-up Comedy, whilst Darren Walsh, who appeared on BBC Presents: Best of the Edinburgh Festival, is performing his show S’Pun.

Bobby Mair, famous for slightly different reasons including reading the internet to Julian Assange through a megaphone and trolling Katie Hopkins’ chat show, will present Bobby Mair Won’t Make You Happy and Richard Pulsford, who can boast being the UK Pun Championship finalist, will use stand up and wordplay in his show Phrases Ready.

Younger stand up Josh Pugh, named English Comedian of the Year 2016, brings his debut show A Boy Named Pugh, whilst Maisie Adam, winner of the 2015 Laurence Marks Comedy Writing Award, presents her show about being a young Yorkshire lass Living On The Edge. Winner of The Funny Women Award 2016, Harriet Braine, is also in town with her show Total Eclipse of the Art, offering a whistle-stop tour of art history.

Other comedians take a more reflective stance on life. Charmian Hughes’ Soixante Mirth mixes comedy and time travel by asking what would happen if you met your younger self. And Jo D’Arcy, who got called all the names in high school and then went back to teach, gives her hilarious reflections on the experience in D’Arcehole. In TMT’s How to Get to Fifty Without Paying Attention, Nick discovers he has reached 50 without noticing, whilst in Lazarus, Luke Martin is looking to find some meaning in his near-fatal illness. Ben Van der Delde explores the people who are happy to hold the jackets of the heroes in his show Sidekick, whilst Fringe Award-winning Nathan Cassidy explores bravery in a volatile world in The Man in the Arena. Sajeela Kershi, brings her hilarious, multicultural comedy Fights Like a Girl and Alasdair Beckett- King shares his opinion that he is legendary, in that there is little historical evidence he exists, in his show The Alasdair Beckett-King Mysteries.

Lastly Amadeus Martin, delivers his take on pen pal disputes, old school Lucozade, fundraising and more , whilst Juliet Meyers, reflects on her time with her rescue dog, in This Flipping Rescue Dog has Ruined My Life, which features her actual dog!

Fringe chair Keith Savage says: “It is a brave person that stands up in front of a bunch of strangers with the purpose of making them laugh – whether it be at the comic or at themselves. This year’s Fringe line-up promises rich pickings and a range of comic possibilities.”

The Fringe wishes to thank its sponsor The University of Derby as well as financial supporters The Trevor Osborne Charitable Trust and High Peak Borough Council, its Fringe Friends and the town’s many Fringe supporters and venues.
